Liturgy

I can hear a million people screaming "Hipster metal! You die! TRVE KVLT BLACK METAL ONLY!" Shut up. Right now. RIGHT. NOW.

Liturgy doesn't look the part of a black metal band, but I can assure you that they truly understand and can create the genre. It's almost like they're re-creating it, taking everything that black metal bands do, applying a formula, and publishing the results. And it is amazing.

This review is concerned primarily with their first album, Renihilation.

The band's various members all perform their duties as black metal musicians well. Droning, angry sounding music is their business, and these guys could all own a company in those departments. Their vocalist releases his lyrics in a savage, violent screech that chills to the bone and threatens your very existence on an almost spiritual level. The guitars are less musical instrumentation than sonic texturalism. Not so much music as emotion applied to sound.

But where this band really shines is their drummer. The man is absolutely insane. He sounds like a tribal drum circle full of spastic shamans were melted into one person, all of their collective consciences waging war over one set of drums to praise various manic deities of disorder and hatred.

This album sounds like it could be the sound track to a movie version of Batman & Judge Dredd- The Ultimate Riddle, a comic in which various beings from across the galaxy (including The Caped Crusader, and Judge Dredd) ferociously fight each other in a cosmic arena overseen by a madman with god-like powers.

Yeah, that just about sums up Liturgy's Renihilation.
