My love/hate relationship with electronic music
So, there are plenty of electronic artists I like and TONS I don't. I think a big part of it is that I don't really know the differences between the sub genres. I've never been around anyone who was able to explain the differences between the genres to me. The problem I have is that with the music I like- punk, metal, folk, rock, etc. there are clear questions you can ask to determine the genre. "Is it punk with acoustic instruments and some traditional instruments? Folk punk! Awesome." "Is the singer shrieking or screeching? Shrieking? Black metal. Awesome."
These are clearly defined things in my mind, whereas "How many beats per minute is the track? What pitches are used? How many layers are there? Does the tempo change? When? How many times? How drastically?"
I DON'T GET IT.
So instead I end up with things like "I LIKE THIS SONG!" Like this... I like this song!
Trance? Techno? Electronica? Hardstyle?
I DON'T FUCKING KNOW!
And so, in conclusion, I don't understand electronic music. But I do know one thing... I like this guy.
Never even thought about the fact that there's sup genres in electronic music, so I guess I'm as lost as you. The first track you posted is really good though.
I'm very much with you with not being able to figure out the genres when it comes to electronic music. But then again, sometimes I flub up when it comes to regular music as well.
Apparently I like listening to trance or rave music when it comes to stuff like this. I don't know. I used to be friends with this guy who was really into techno and electronic music so that's the only reason I even know what genre I prefer.
TL;DR Whatever music usually gets played at Starscape and places like it, I usually like to listen to...usually.
I feel ya on the electronic music tip... 70% of what I listen to is electronic, and I have to root through a lot of mediocre stuff to find the gems. I think the main issue is that every 14 year old with a laptop is making electronic music these days.
I hate electronic genres. It just doesn't work for the bulk of it. Like, it's easy to understand some basics, drum and bass, house, etc... but since all the good ones are trying to be different, it's just jumbled genres. Hundreds of them. What I do? I just stick to the artists. I like electronic music that sounds like 'this dj'. Every time I REALLY like someone, I look up their genre and look up others that have the same genre and I realize the characteristics. It takes some major dedication to know them all, I can't do it, so I'm with you.
I like a few electronic tracks but most of them are annoying..
