Crack Rock Steady

Some of you might not know what rocksteady is. Rocksteady is what came after first wave ska, and before the rise of reggae. (Two of my favorite genres.) But, I'm not a huge fan of rocksteady. No particular reason, just doesn't massively appeal to me. Here's a prime example of a rocksteady song.

Not bad at all, I'm just not a huge fan. Then we have a genre that's exploded in popularity over the past decade or so. Death metal. I'm sure you all know what death metal sounds like, but why not? Just for fun. One song. C'mon!

Now what what happen if we mixed these two? What would become of this unholy alliance? What unfathomably evil form would emerge from the aether should these two ever meet? How about a band that records one album and doesn't put a barcode on the album so it can't be sold? How about a band that records an album and breaks up the same day? How about a band whose members can't stay the hell away from each other long enough to record music with other people?

We get the founders of a genre that should not be, we get Choking Victim, progenitors of crackrocksteady. It's also worth mentioning in a class I had in college we had to visually interpret a song. I did this one.

This is what sick people like me call cruising music.

You never know what genres people are going to decide to jam together, or how it's going to turn out. Musicians should never be afraid to explore, and listeners should never be afraid to follow them, even to the depths of hell. (Or to crunk-core, which is a good idea, but maybe not well-executed.)
